  • What is Pigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. Depending on the depth of melanin deposit, the pigmentation is graded as superficial depth (epidermal), medium depth (part epidermis and part dermis) and deep (only dermal). Hyperpigmentation can affect the skin color of people of any race.
  • What are the types of Pigmentation commonly seen in skin?
Freckles are a common form of hyperpigmentation. They occur due to sun sensitivity. They can appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the face and arms.
Melasma or chloasma is symmetrical darkened skin that appear most often as a result of hormonal changes. Pregnancy, for example, can trigger overproduction of melanin that causes the "mask of pregnancy" on the face.
Other common examples of pigmentation are dark under eye circles, dark underarms, dark toes/elbows/knuckles, etc.
  • What are the causes of pigmentation?
Melanocytes or pigment cells are the cells in the skin which are responsible for producing melanin. When these cells are activated, usually via sun exposure, the skin darkens. Hormonal factors , friction or physical trauma can also activate these cells. Obesity and even some medications cause darkening of skin folds. Sometimes acne or any injury may leave dark spots after the condition clears. Photo-sensitive ingredients (perfume and some essential oils) can cause photo-allergy which may heal; with pigmentation.
  • Do pigmented spots have more sun sensitivity?
Yes.They can become darker or more pronounced when skin is exposed to the sun. This happens because melanin absorbs the energy of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays in order to protect the skin from overexposure which in turn increases melanin which increases the pigmentation. The usual result of this process is skin tanning, which tends to darken areas that are already hyperpigmented.
  • What ingredients is recommended to treat skin pigmentation?
Ingredients which act by suppressing the enzyme system responsible for melanin production include hydroquinone, retinois, azelaic acid, Arbutin Vitamin C, Licorice, kojic acid , etc Alpha Hydroxy Acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid will boost lightening products by accelerating exfoliation of surface cells, thus fade existing pigmentation and stimulate cell renewal.
  • What medical procedures are done to treat pigmentation?
Chemical Peels, laser and Mesotherapy are few modalities that can be used to treat pigmentation. The exact procedure to do is decided by the dermatologist.
  • Is Sunscreen use mandatory when treating pigmentation?
Yes. Infact there is no point in progressing forward with any treatment – medical or procedural, if compliance with sunscreen use is not met with.
